The Ethics Project
A major component of my introduction to ethics courses is a group project, in which small groups of students are reimbursed for up to $500 in expenses (from external funding) to do something good. The course includes discussion of theories of the good and the morality of pursuing and promoting it, but groups have a wide berth in interpreting the assignment. They are free to give money to charity, hold an event, start a for-profit business, or even throw a party. Groups give a presentation and write a paper at the end of the semester explaining what they did, and why they did it rather than anything else they could have done.
Students' projects have been reported in the campus newspaper, and featured on the local news.
